INCADESCENCE

SOLO EXHIBITION

2022
ART CITY
Bologna, Italy

The genesis of this exhibition began in May 2020, during the pandemic. At that moment, a global dualism emerged between the need for physical contact with others and the risk that such contact implied. On one side, human warmth; on the other, social distancing.

The project is based on nickel-chromium wires suspended in the air that — when traversed by electrical impulses — alter their natural state, challenging the viewer’s perception of reality.

In its inert state, nickel-chromium appears as an ordinary metallic wire. However, when crossed by electrical current, it changes state. Specifically, when the material receives a slight discharge, the wire vibrates, producing an oscillating sound. As the voltage increases, it emits infrared radiation — imperceptible to the human eye — while simultaneously generating heat. With a further increase in electrical discharge, the wire expands until it becomes incandescent.

Conceptually, this material makes it possible to suggest the dualism between warmth and closeness versus the danger such proximity may imply: heat and light welcome and invite contemplation and approach, while incandescence compels distance.

From this starting point, the exhibition seeks to generate an emotional landscape of tension, attraction, magnetic fields, and physical and mental boundaries, capable of evoking and reflecting upon what was experienced during this recent period.

Incandescences transforms the gallery space into an environment where sound, vibration, light, and heat interact with one another in order to embody the dualism between attraction and distancing — a way of sublimating and translating the experience of the pandemic into the realm of art.
